Couples First Dance Song Ideas

It's rare these days that a couple has a so ng that's totally theirs. When it comes to the part of Wedding Planning that you're deciding on a first dance song, a lot of couples are stumped.

first dance wedding songs

My Husband and I danced to a combination of "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Judy Garland at our wedding. The mash up of the two songs in the version we chose was done by an amazing group called The Straight No Chasers.

It was a difficult decision and we changed it a few times before making a final decision. Our number one rule was we didn't want to choose the original version of "I'm Your" because it was just a little too poppy for a first dance and I had seen way too many other brides use it.

Honestly though, I didn't even hear the song while it played. I was too busy talking to my new Husband and enjoying the fact that we were finally married.

I want to put an end to the myth that you should choose a song that's not "overplayed" because it's not a horrible thing. Just think of the first time you hear your first dance song on the radio after your marriage, that will make it pretty special.

So here are my favorites for First Dance songs...

  • "You and Me"- Lifehouse

  • "Learning to Breath"-Switchfoot

  • "I Will"- The Beatles

  • "I Will Buy You a New Life"- Everclear

  • "It's You"-Michelle Branch

  • "You and I"-Ingrid Michaelson

  • "Sweethearts Together"-The Rolling Stones

  • "Love Song"- 311

  • "Drops of Jupiter"-Train

  • "Blackbird"-The Beatles

  • "Just The Way You Are"-Bruno Mars

  • "Today Was a Fairytale"-Taylor Swift

  • "A Thousand Years"- Christina Perri

  • "All My Life"-K-Ci & JoJo

  • "Take My Breath Away"-Berlin or Jessica Simpson

What will you be dancing to at your wedding? Some couples even choose not to have a first dance, will this be you?
